For months, the concert business has been gripped by a supposedly alarming new illness: Blue-Dot Fever.
The symptoms are easy to spot. Pull up the seating chart for an upcoming concert and find large clusters of unsold seats—represented by blue dots—still available days or weeks before the show. Post a screenshot on social media, add some speculation about overpricing or declining consumer demand, and wait for the panic to spread.
Look at Lily Allen’s tour? Or Roxette’s 40th anniversary run! Freaking “Diamond” David Lee Roth from Van Halen can’t catch a break. Something must be wrong — its blue dot fever right?
Wrong.
Mega promoter Live Nation’s second-quarter earnings report offers the clearest evidence yet that Blue-Dot Fever is not a meaningful industrywide problem—at least not right now.
