After two quiet years, Justin Bieber's return to the stage sent Coachella tickets flying out the door faster than ever. But where Beliebers go, scammers follow.
Hundreds of fans who shelled out up to $5,000 for a wristband that normally costs $600 showed up to the desert only to find out their ticket was worthless. Resellers on sites like StubHub took their money, then cancelled the sales when they realized they could squeeze even more cash out of the next desperate buyer — leaving real fans locked out of the festival they'd already spent thousands to attend.
The rage is all over TikTok and Instagram, where furious festival-goers are documenting the moment their expensive wristbands failed to scan at the gate. It's a nightmare that's been building for years in the shady world of wristband resales — but Bieber's sky-high demand turned a slow leak into a flood.
And the wristband isn't even the biggest expense. Fans are also dropping thousands on flights, hotels, and Airbnbs just to get to the desert in the first place. For those who got scammed, that means walking away from Coachella with nothing to show for it but an empty bank account and a really bad TikTok.
A rep from Stubhub told Decibel that the “vast majority of Coachella transactions on StubHub are fulfilled successfully, and our key quality metrics, including denied entry rates and refund rates, have actually improved year over year despite significantly higher transaction volume. In short, more complaints? Yes. More fraud? No.”
Stubhub also added “On the fraud side, our detection systems are catching more bad-faith sellers earlier than in prior years, and we've increased proactive seller removals heading into Weekend 2. We've also seen a meaningful drop in chargeback activity, which suggests our buyer protections are working.”
Ticketing veteran Scott Friedman, who runs the TicketTalk network, has a simple fix: ditch the untraceable physical wristbands and go fully digital, the way Taylor Swift's Eras Tour did with Ticketmaster. Digital tickets are tied to an identity, making them nearly impossible to resell fraudulently.
Or better yet? Skip the $5,000 gamble entirely — Bieber hits the Coachella stage this Saturday at 11:30 p.m. Pacific, streaming live and free on YouTube. Your couch has never looked so smart.
